INJURY UPDATES
10-day and 15-day IL
RHP Ross Stripling (mid-back strain)
Expected return: By Sept. 6
Stripling traveled with the Giants to Chicago after throwing one inning on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento on Sept. 1. He had been penciled in for a longer outing, but the Giants instead opted for a quick tuneup so he can be activated, if needed, in the next few days. Stripling had back stiffness following his start vs. Tampa Bay on Aug. 16 and landed on the 15-day injured list three days later.
"We're just going to have to read and react," Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. "Excited to have Strip back. We'll just have to figure out when the right time to deploy him is." (Last updated: Sept. 4)
OF Michael Conforto (left hamstring strain)
Expected return: September
Conforto felt his hamstring grab while making a catch in right field on Aug. 23. He underwent an MRI exam that revealed a Grade 2 strain, which will likely sideline him for "a couple of weeks, at least," according to manager Gabe Kapler. Conforto has resumed light baseball activity, including hitting, throwing and running. He rejoined the club in Chicago to continue rehabbing with the team.
"Michael wanted to be with the team, and we wanted him with the team," Kapler said. "I think he makes the environment better. He brings a lot of energy to the ballpark. He's a positive guy that we like having around."
Conforto, who will have the ability to opt out of the final year of his two-year, $36 million contract this offseason, has a slash line of .251/.343/.405 with 15 home runs over 111 games this year. (Last updated: Sept. 4)
OF AJ Pollock (left oblique strain)
Expected return: September
Pollock began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento on Sept. 1. Pollock was acquired from the Mariners along with utility man Mark Mathias at the Trade Deadline, but he went 0-for-6 over five games before suffering a "Grade 1-plus" left oblique strain while making a throw from center field on Aug. 8. 60-day IL
RHP John Brebbia (right lat strain)
Expected return: September
Brebbia, who has been out since June 16, faced five batters in one scoreless inning Sept. 1 on his rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento. He threw 14 pitches (11 strikes) and collected two strikeouts. Brebbia rejoined the Giants in Chicago and is likely to be activated in the next few days. (Last updated: Sept. 4)
IF Mark Mathias (right shoulder strain)
Expected return: 2024
Mathias was initially optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Aug. 14, but the move was reversed and he was placed on the IL after he reported soreness in his right shoulder. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list on Aug. 22, effectively ending his regular season. (Last updated: Aug. 22)
RHP Anthony DeSclafani (right elbow flexor strain)
Expected return: 2024
Manager Gabe Kapler said DeSclafani felt some "fullness" in his right forearm after throwing his last bullpen session and underwent an MRI exam that revealed a Grade 1 strain. DeSclafani received a platelet-rich plasma injection on Aug. 6 and won't throw for six to eight weeks. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list on Aug. 14, ending his regular season. RHP Cole Waites (right elbow sprain)
Expected return: 2024
Waites was placed on the seven-day Minor League injured list on July 16 before he was transferred to the Major League 60-day IL on July 18. He has a 6.16 ERA in 32 Triple-A appearances (three starts) this season. (Last updated: July 18)
LHP Thomas Szapucki (thoracic outlet syndrome surgery)
Expected return: 2024
Szapucki underwent season-ending surgery to relieve thoracic outlet syndrome on his left side with Dr. Robert Thompson in St. Louis on May 19.
"It's really disappointing," manager Gabe Kapler said. "Part of the reason that this one is especially hard is because it was hard to figure out what his ailments were. He was wrestling with different things at different times. Obviously, the initial rehab shot that we took wasn't working out to his satisfaction.
"We chose this route as the best for right now. Hopefully it works out well and he comes back throwing hard and feeling good." (Last updated: May 19)
C Roberto Pérez (right rotator cuff strain)
Expected return: 2024
Pérez will miss the remainder of the 2023 campaign after undergoing surgery to repair the rotator cuff in his right shoulder in Los Angeles on April 12. The veteran backstop started five of the Giants' first seven games behind the plate, but he exited the club's April 7 loss to the Royals after hurting his shoulder while attempting to throw out Kyle Isbel in the sixth inning.
The 34-year-old returned to San Francisco on April 14 to begin his rehab program. (Last updated: April 14)
