LATEST NEWS

Sept. 3: OF/DH Jorge Soler (right hip) out of lineup for fifth straight game
The Marlins’ home run leader, Soler said on Saturday that he felt healthy enough to return to the lineup, but that did not occur for any of Miami’s four games against Washington this weekend in the nation’s capital. Soler was out of the lineup again Sunday for the fifth straight game; he last played Tuesday, and with Monday’s off-day, it could be a full week until he returns to game action due to his lingering hip tightness.

Sept. 2: RHP activated off 15-day IL; RHP claimed off waivers by Orioles
The Marlins had planned for Cueto to be reinstated from the IL on Saturday to start against the Nationals for several days. But the move didn’t become official until shortly before first pitch after López, who pitched for the Orioles from 2020-22, was claimed off of waivers by Baltimore.

López had a brief tenure in Miami, pitching to a 9.26 ERA in 11 2/3 innings since the Marlins acquired him via trade from the Twins on July 26.

“We were excited for him that he got picked up, because we think he’s a good pitcher,” manager Skip Schumaker said. “It just didn’t work out [here] the way he wanted things to work out. But he has real stuff. That’s why we acquired him, and that’s probably why Baltimore took a chance on him.”

Cueto returns for his first start since Aug. 15, having missed a little more than two weeks due to a viral infection. The veteran righty is 0-3 with a 5.57 ERA in seven appearances (six starts) this season.

Sept. 1: UTL , RHP  recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville
Looking for an offensive jolt as rosters expanded on Friday, the Marlins called up Edwards -- their No. 4 prospect, per MLB Pipeline -- as well as the right-handed Harleib. Edwards hit .381 (8-for-21) in a cup of coffee in May, and he has slashed .351/.429/.457 with 32 stolen bases and 80 runs in 93 games for the Jumbo Shrimp this year.

Manager Skip Schumaker said Edwards is a defensive option at multiple positions; he spent considerable time at second, third, shortstop and center field this season with Jacksonville.

Aug. 31: LHP Andrew Nardi (finger) to avoid IL
Nardi, who has been one of the Marlins' best high-leverage relievers over the past month, took a 99.3 mph line-drive single off his pitching hand in the top of the eighth inning of Miami's 3-0, 10-inning loss to Tampa Bay on Wednesday night. The ball hit him squarely on his left pinkie, ring and middle fingers, all of which were bandaged postgame. Subsequent X-rays were negative, and manager Skip Schumaker said Thursday that Nardi will not require a stint on the injured list.

INJURY UPDATES

10-day and 15-day IL

OF (left hamstring strain)
Expected return: TBD
García has begun increasing lower body activities. He was placed on the IL after undergoing an MRI on Aug. 23 to determine the severity of the hamstring strain. García, who missed more than two months with left back tightness this season, landed on the injured list twice with a left hamstring strain in 2022. (Last updated: Aug. 29)

RHP (left hamstring strain, left hip impingement)
Expected return: TBD
Brazoban, who went on the IL on Aug. 14 for a left hamstring strain, underwent an MRI over the weekend of Aug. 18-20, which revealed a left hip impingement. After resting for a few days, he rejoined the team in Miami to continue his rehab after taking some days off to rest. Brazoban had been dealing with a few lower-half issues, but the hamstring affected him mostly during his Aug. 13 outing, when he gave up three runs and issued four walks in 2 2/3 innings. 60-day IL

LHP (right lat strain and left biceps strain)
Expected return:
2024
Rogers has increased to playing catch at 70 feet after he began throwing on Aug. 25. Previously, he had been in a no-throw status since he was scratched from a rehab start on June 10. According to Rogers, he felt and heard a pop while throwing warmup pitches on June 10 before his rehab start. He couldn't lift his arm without pain. Rogers said he partially tore his lat, which has to naturally heal. For now, he can do lower-body lifts, keep his left arm strong and work on right arm range-of-motion exercises.

Rogers last pitched in the Majors on April 19, initially landing on the injured list with a left biceps strain.

"I think if he comes back at some point this year, that's icing on the cake, but really, what's most important is Trevor long term and making sure that he feels comfortable physically, that he feels comfortable in his progression," general manager Kim Ng said. (Last updated: Aug. 29)

RHP (left hip impingement)
Expected return: 2024
Barnes, who has been at home in Connecticut following left hip femoral acetabular impingement surgery on July 25, returned to Miami prior to the Marlins' series vs. the Nationals on Aug. 25 to continue his physical therapy. He was transferred to the 60-day IL on July 28. The recovery timeline before Barnes can resume baseball activities is three months, meaning his season is likely over, unless the Marlins make a deep postseason run. Barnes slipped on the mound in mid-May against San Francisco, which led to the hip impingement. (Last updated: Aug. 25)

RHP (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return:
2024
Bender, who was placed on the 60-day injured list on March 15, is continuing his throwing progression in Jupiter, Fla. Bender underwent Tommy John surgery on Aug. 30 last year. (Last updated: Aug. 21)

Meyer is progressing with his rehab at home in Minnesota. He saw Dr. Neal ElAttrache on July 24 after expressing that he had soreness in his right elbow, and an MRI revealed no structural damage. Meyer underwent Tommy John surgery on Aug. 9 after exiting his second MLB start on July 23 with 10 pitches. (Last updated: Aug. 21)

OF (right knee sprain)
Expected return: 2024
Davis, who was transferred to the 60-day IL on July 10 after undergoing surgery on July 6, is walking without a brace and is increasing quad and lower-body exercises. The timetable for a return is three to six months. Davis had an MRI on July 5 that revealed a meniscus injury (not a tear) to his right knee. (Last updated: Aug. 21)
