Injuries & Moves: Greene (elbow) placed on IL
LATEST NEWS
Sept. 3: OF Riley Greene (right elbow inflammation) placed on 10-day injured list; IF/OF Tyler Nevin recalled from Triple-A Toledo
The Tigers had hoped they’d avoided injury with Greene after he hit the ground hard on a diving catch in Friday’s win over the White Sox, but Greene’s elbow swelled up overnight and became sore, prompting the Tigers to have him undergo an MRI exam. He’ll return to Detroit next week to begin rehab and will get another MRI in 7-10 days once the swelling subsides.
It's a tough blow not just for what Greene means to the Tigers, but because he was just beginning to work out of a slump with back-to-back multi-hit games and had hope for a strong stretch run to carry him through his first full Major League season.
“It hurts a lot,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “Riley’s one of the guys we look to every night to do something offensively, defensively. Anytime you lose a bat like that, a personality, a presence, a defender, everything about him, it’s a tough punch to the gut.”
It’s the second injury Greene has suffered this season following a hard impact on a catch. He missed June and the first week of July with a stress reaction in his left fibula after colliding with Comerica Park’s center-field fence to make a catch.
“He’s not going to stop being Riley Greene and playing the way that he does and the caliber that he does,” Hinch said. “But it’s tough on him, it’s tough on us, when something like this happens.”
Sept. 1: IF/OF Andre Lipcius recalled from Triple-A Toledo; RHP Miguel Díaz selected from Toledo
The Tigers announced after Thursday night’s Mud Hens game that Lipcius and Díaz will fill their extra two roster spots for September. Lipcius, a third-round pick in 2019, batted .272/.363/.419 with 11 home runs and 58 RBIs in 97 games for the Hens -- including a home run on Thursday just before he received the news -- while playing first, second and third base as well as left field. He made a big impression with the Tigers in Spring Training, batting .293 (12-for-41) with three homers, three doubles and 11 RBIs. His combination of power hitting, plate discipline and defensive versatility fit him into president of baseball operations Scott Harris’ profile for dominating the strike zone.
“From really early June on, after we challenged him to make a few adjustments, attention to detail stuff and really get him locked in on how he could impact a Major League roster, he dominated,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “And that’s a really good sign for someone who has hit his whole career. So I think the reward for coming up is really cool. It’s well-deserved. Amongst a lot of choices, Lip certainly did his part to respond to the development staff.”
The 28-year-old Díaz appeared in three games for the Tigers last year but has spent all of this season in Toledo, posting a 2-4 record with a 5.05 ERA and 14 saves in 49 appearances. He struck out 73 batters over 57 innings. He’ll need to be added to the 40-man roster.
Sept. 1: RHP Casey Mize (Tommy John surgery) to rest before being re-evaluated next week
Mize’s second live BP session against hitters lasted just 18 pitches, two fewer than his first session last weekend. He reported fatigue and cut the session a few pitches short, though he reportedly looked sharp with his fastball topping out at 96 miles per hour.
“This is stuff that you all are seeing for the first time,” Mize said of the rehab process on Thursday. “This is not linear at all. In Lakeland, guys miss months with setbacks doing this and nobody hears about it because they’re away. There’s just fatigue and feelings that come along with this, of hitting a new step or doing something new that I’m going to have to work through. I’ve been doing that this entire process and I’m going to have to do it now. This is nothing new and nothing concerning from our end.”
Mize will take a few days to rest before being evaluated early next week to resume throwing, according to the Tigers' medical update.
Sept. 1: LHP Bennett Sousa designated for assignment
Sousa had just been claimed off waivers on Tuesday and assigned to Triple-A Toledo. He did not pitch a game there before being designated to clear a roster spot for Díaz.

LHP Tyler Alexander (left lat strain)
Expected return: 2024
Alexander strained his lat on his final pitch July 2 at Colorado. An MRI exam revealed a partial tear, but after a consultation with Chicago-based specialist Dr. Anthony Romeo, Alexander should be able to avoid surgery. He’ll rehab for the next three months but should be able to do a normal offseason throwing program and be ready for the start of next Spring Training. (Last updated: July 9)
